Merging on a highway can be tricky and a little overwhelming the first few times you do it, but with the right preparation and a little practice, it will feel like second nature in no time at all.
The first (and most important) thing you need to do is to use the merging area or ramp to get up to speed. This lane is provided so you can seamlessly enter the flow of traffic without interrupting the drivers who are already there. Press the gas pedal until you reach the speed the other highway drivers are going before you attempt to squeeze in.
Before moving over into the driving lane, make sure to check your mirrors and quickly look over your shoulder the ensure you have room to move into the lane. Don't forget to use your turn signal so other drivers know you're coming. Following step two will ensure you don't accidentally merge into another vehicle!
As you enter and the lane and become part of the traffic flow, make sure to adjust your following distance based on your speed and the speed of those around you. You might have to speed up or slow down a little to do this and make sure you're following at a safe distance. Don't forget to turn off your turn signal!
If you follow these 3 simple steps, you'll be merging with ease in no time at all.
